Built more than 4500 years ago as the burial places of the pharaohs Cheops, Chefren, and Mycerinus, the three Great Pyramids are the sole survivors of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The magnificent Pyramid of Cheops was built from over two million blocks of stone and took tens of thousands of workers twenty years to build. Below Chefren’s pyramid lies the Sphinx, depicting what is thought to be Chefren’s head on the body of a lion. It’s impossible not to be astonished by this strange creature that looks out from the Giza Plateau over contemporary Cairo.
